Trimsense on dinghies — 7 ways to sail better.

Updated: May 21

Trimsense is a useful tool in any boat class, but as the first to get it are the dinghy sailors, we thought that it would be great to share some possible use cases for them. We listed them to try and keep it as simple as possible.

1. Understand the trim elements.

The Trimsense system clearly shows how making certain adjustments changes sail shape. This may sound basic, but have you ever thought how changing the jib car position changes the shape of the jib?

2. Check sail modes.

With Trimsense a sailor can see at a glance if the sails are working in the same mode or not. This way trim mistakes can be easily avoided.

3. Save your trims.

The system saves all your trims. We will provide software for linking the sail-data to a map and/or video. This enables sailors to revisit the moments of interest and find connections between specific sail shapes and performance levels.

4. Compare to previous trims in real time.

Enough with the learning and avoiding mistakes. Now we get to the huge plus: The system allows you to compare the current sail shape to a saved one (in real time of course). Using this, a sailor can regenerate proven settings with precision. New sails or creeping ropes? No problem.

5. Compare different boats to each other. (also in real time).

Now you might be asking: “If Trimsense allows comparing the current trim to a saved one, is it also possible to compare the current trims of multiple boats?” Yes, it is. And yes, in real time. This makes two (or more) boat testing a lot more effective. Coach boat is required though.

6. See how your rig responds to gusts.

Thanks to the high frame rate of the system, it is even possible to study the gust response of the rig. Maybe one team is faster than the other because their rig is set up to respond to gusts or lulls in a specific manner?

7. Analyze your sail handling.

The high frame rate also enables analyzing the sail handling of a team. It can be seen how a team made use of their sails in starts, mark roundings and also in straight line sailing. And yes, comparing sail handling across teams is another nice opportunity to have.

That’s about it for now. We are working hard to make Trimsense a multi-purpose tool, not just a one trick pony. If you have thoughts on these use cases or you came up with your own, please do let us know!
